ABOUT : colorata, the scarlet sterculia, is a medium-sized tree with spreading branches. It sheds leaves before the onset of flowering. After leaf-shedding, buds sprout and develop into flowers. The tree flowers from March to April. The genus Sterculia was named after the Latin god Sterculius. Stercus means dung.
CARE : Sterculia colorata does best in filtered sun, 4 to 5 hours a day. Avoid intense afternoon sun by sheltering this plant beneath the limbs of a larger plant or placing it in the shadow of a sheer curtain. Grow outdoors in light shade or indoors in a sunny window with eastern or western exposure.
